Horst Construction to Set Steel to Support Atrium at Garden Spot Village

13-Ton Steel Ring Slated to Raise This Morning

February 2, 2001 (Manheim Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania) Horst Construction plans to set the steel weighing over 26,000 pounds that will support a 2,300 square-foot hexagonal atrium at Garden Spot Village (New Holland). “Horst Construction will begin lifting the steel ring around 10:30 am on Friday, February 2,” said Mark Yerkes, the administrative superintendent dedicated to the project. (Curvin Hoover is serving as site superintendent for this project.) The atrium is part of a 220,000 square-foot project of a dynamic multi-use facility which includes a 65-unit assisted-living complex, skilled-care beds and 21-bed dementia unit supported by a “Village Square” with an indoor park area, chapel, swimming pool, bank, beauty salon, offices and other support facilities that began in May 2000 for the Christian-centered retirement community.

Three of the four new wings are under roof. The fourth wing located on the Main Street/Village Square that will feature the atrium has structural steel and bearing walls in place. Horst Construction will mount a 20-foot (diameter) octagonal skylight that will rise four feet higher than the atrium structure in February.

In anticipation of the atrium being hoisted 40 feet in the air by a 200-ton crane, Garden Spot Village’s executive director Nevin Kraybill said, “Seeing the roof being lifted on to the Village Square helps to bring into perspective and reality where the focal point is for our beautiful campus. Long range planning established the Village Square as "main entrance" to the Village. The Village Square provides a vital link between the levels of care we offer in our Continuing Care Retirement Community.”

Completion of the entire project is slated for summer 2001. The contract amount is undisclosed.
