Horst Construction Thrilled to Build Bird-in-Hand Inn Addition
Completion Slated in Time for Summer 2000 Visitors
(June 2, 2000) Lancaster (Manheim Township), PA Horst Construction is working on an exciting new addition for the currently 100-room Bird-in-Hand Family Inn, a member of the group hotels and restaurants managed by The Bird-in-Hand Corporation. Construction at 2740 Old Philadelphia Pike (on the site of existing hotel) began on November 16, 1999.
Visitors to the facility will enjoy the new features that the Inn will offer:
- A three-story lobby, reception area and upscale guest room addition (including several family suites and king rooms)
- The expansion of a third floor (including 21 additional guest on the existing two-story Family Inn
- A 56' x 60' two-story pool enclosure over an existing outdoor pool
- An enlarged spa and new fitness equipment
- A new outdoor pool measuring 70' x 30', and
- A guest laundry
Horst Construction is delivering the project in three phases while the Bird-in-Hand Family Inn is in operation. Site grading and selective demolition of the existing building has been completed. The third-floor expansion of the existing building was enclosed in December and interior finishes are in progress. Work on the foundations, structural steel erection and roof trusses for the three-story addition are complete and the foundations for the pool enclosure have also begun. The Horst team will deliver all services while the existing facility is in operation.
Horst affiliate, Cornerstone Design-Architects is the design architect. Horst Construction, Horst Excavating (formerly Bilran Excavating), Horst Masonry (formerly Modern Masonry) and Horst Painting (formerly Ash Painting) are all participating. Horst Construction's Robert Martzall is the project manager and Mark Yerkes is the project superintendent.
Martzall notes that this project builds on an existing relationship with the owners of the property, Smucker Associates. Horst Construction expanded the Family Inn facilities in 1979 and again in 1987. Martzall explained that Horst Construction's good customer relationship with Smucker Associates has generated plans for a future expansion of the Family Inn that would include conference rooms and additional guest accommodations.
The completed facility is scheduled to open in time for the summer 2000 tourist season. Smucker Associates' Jim Smucker believes that "the new additions, combined with the existing miniature golf course, recreational area and lake will significantly increase the overall value for guests who visit the Family Inn."
