Construction for the Addition and Renovation to the Lancaster Institute
for Health Education
October 17 Groundbreaking Marks Beginning of Horst Construction’s Work (October 11, 2001) Manheim Township—Lancaster, PA Cornerstone Design-Architects and Horst Construction (HC) is honored to have been selected for the second time to build for Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, expanding and modernizing the Lancaster Institute for Health Education (located at Lemon and Lime streets, a block from the hospital) to meet the community’s increased demand for health professionals. On Wednesday, October 17, at eight o’clock am, Lancaster General Hospital representatives, Dale R. Yoder, AIA, President of Cornerstone Design-Architects, Randall L. Horst, President & CEO of the Horst Group, and community and civic leaders, will break ground in a traditional community-oriented ceremony celebrating Lancaster General Hospital’s mission of meeting the community’s healthcare needs. Supporting that mission, Cornerstone Design-Architects and Horst Construction are pleased to share the event that marks the beginning of construction on the 20,400 square-foot addition and 19,000 square feet of renovations to the existing school. The Institute has applied to the state Department of Education to become a college. If approved, it will grant two-year associate’s degrees to students in all of its programs. Currently, students receive a diploma upon completion of a course of study. Lancaster General Hospital is eager to move forward on the $2.5 million project that includes a three-story addition to the existing nursing school—four classrooms on the first level, and science, surgical, nursing arts and two assessment labs on the second level. The lower level will be available for future expansion. With the extra space, the school will be able to enhance its computer-learning center and start a learning resource center, goals in addition to increasing their student base. The renovations will improve and modernize existing space for administrative offices and student lounge areas. Other sections of the 100-year old school will also be updated, with special attention given to preserving the historical Lemon Street façade of the former Haupt Elementary School in its entirety within the atrium of the lobby of the new construction. The North Lime Street entrance will be the main access into the school. Much of the cost for the project will be funded from the estate of the late Robert Flory, a local philanthropist who has long been a supporter of the hospital. Cornerstone Design Architect’s president Dale R. Yoder expressed his excitement for the opportunity to work again with the Hospital, this time in concert with sister company, Horst Construction. He shares, “Cornerstone Design-Architects truly values our relationship with Lancaster General Hospital, one that began with the design of Walter L. Aument Family Health Center in Quarryville, and the Stager Conference Center at Lancaster General Hospital in 1999. We are thrilled that Lancaster General Hospital will enjoy the benefits obtained through the efficiencies and quality processes of partnering with our sister company, Horst Construction.” Horst Construction’s vice president of sales and marketing William J. Mullineaux II is “pleased that Horst Construction can support Cornerstone Design Architect’s creative and technical excellence with a building team that is second to none.” Cornerstone Design-Architect’s Eric Vosburgh, Intern Architect, served as project captain, Horst Construction’s William Wos estimated the project, Dennis Cunningham will serve as project manager and Fred Geesey will serve as project superintendent. Horst Excavating, Horst Masonry and Horst Painting will also join Horst Construction in the effort. Damon Snyder is serving as the hospital’s project manager.
